STREET ART in Rome Advent Calendar (3.12.15)

Saint Basil, the Liberator
Blu, 2014
Via Recanati, San Basilio neighborhood of Rome

This monumental mural shows St. Basil breaking padlocks with his hands walking towards the suburb stepping on barricades. The writing on the bottom of the saint's tunic commemorates Fabrizio Caruso,  the 19 year old boy who was killed by police during the eviction of tenants from buildings on September 8th, 1974. On the lower right of the painting there were some policeman transformed into sheep and pigs. Rome's mayor Ignazio Marino had this part of the mural erased because because it contained "offensive statements against the police."
